Devils-Lake
is the name of both a large freshwater lake and town located in northeastern North Dakota. The lake is the largest natural body of water in North Dakota and the second largest lake in the state after the artificially created Lake Sakakawea. Devils Lake reportedly has some of the best fishing in the world for walleye, pike and jumbo perch, and the lake offers lots of other recreational opportunities, such as swimming, boating, water skiing, picnicking, miniature golf, hiking and biking. Snowmobiling is popular in the wintertime, where the Lake Region Trail System centers around the town of Devils Lake and spans out in all directions from there. The area is also well known for its duck, goose and white-tail deer hunting and excellent bird watching opportunities. Public lands in the Devils Lake region include Sullys Hill National Game Preserve, Lake Alice National Wildlife Refuge and the Nikolaisen, Wengler, Martinson and Hofstrand Waterfowl Production Areas. Gaming and car racing are also nearby. The town of Devils Lake has fourteen buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with several museums. An annual Walleye Tournament has been a tradition at Devils Lake for over thirty years.
