Ellendale
is the county seat for Dickey County, located in southeastern North Dakota. It is situated on U.S. Highway 281 on the border of North and South Dakota and is called the "Gateway to North Dakota." As of the 2000 census, the population of Ellendale was 1,559 residents. Founded in 1882, Ellendale is home to the Trinity Bible College, which is located on the former campus of the North Dakota State Normal and Industrial School. Described as a "charming, rural prairie town," Ellendale offers visitors specialty shops that include an old-fashioned variety store, a greenhouse and coffee shops . The town has an active arts council which sponsors several exhibits throughout the year. You can also tour the town's opera house, museum and courthouse, or enjoy a scenic drive west of town on Highway 11 to nearby Pheasant Lake. The eastern part of Dickey County lies in the Drift Prairie, which is a hilly, green part of North Dakota that is filled with picturesque farms. Highway 281 runs north and south and lies parallel to the hills which mark the beginning of the rolling Great Plains. The Ellendale area is known for its excellent hunting and bird watching opportunities.

Southern North Dakota near the South Dakota border is located in the Great Plains region of the United States. This area is classified as having an extreme continental climate due to its distance from both mountains and oceans. With four distinct seasons, southern North Dakota is known for its long, cold, snowy winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn are short and highly variable seasons in the Great Plains. North Dakota is one of the driest states in the country, although springtime flooding is a relatively common event, due to the springtime melt and eventual runoff of rivers in the area. Other meteorological events can include hail, blizzards, polar fronts, tornadoes and high-velocity straight-line winds. Typically, in this region, the warmest month is July and the coldest month is January. The wettest month is usually June and the driest month is December.
