Minot
is the fourth largest city in North Dakota, located in the north-central portion of the state. It has a population of approximately 37,000 residents and serves as the county seat for Ward County. Known as the "Magic City," Minot was founded during the construction of the Great Northern Railroad. The town literally sprung up overnight "as if by magic," when the Great Northern Railroad ended its push through the state for the winter after having trouble constructing a trestle across Gassman Coulee. During Prohibition, Minot became known as "Little Chicago," because it was known as a central hub of Al Capone's liquor smuggling operations. Smugglers used underground tunnels to transport and conceal their illegal cargo, and some of those tunnels can still be accessed today. In the 1950s, the Minot Air Force Base was constructed just twelve miles north of town. Attractions in Minot are plentiful and varied, and include the Roosevelt Park Zoo, Scandinavian Heritage Park, Old Soo Depot Transportation Museum, the Minot Railroad Museum, Dakota Territory Air Museum and a 24,000 square foot water park. Outdoor recreational activities include golf, tennis, snowmobiling and hiking and biking at Black Butte Adventures, which is located 18 miles southeast of Minot. For a small city, Minot has a lot to offer visitors and residents alike.

Northern North Dakota lies within the continental interior of the United States. This region experiences four distinct seasons, including sunny, hot summers and very cold winters. Temperatures below 0°F (-18°C) are common in the winter, while temperatures can reach 105°F (41°C) in the summertime. Rainfall is sparse to moderate with periods of drought. Typical of all states located in the Great Plains, winters are long with moderate snowfall. Occasional humidity and thunderstorms occur in spring and summer, however, in general, the climate in North Dakota is quite dry. Other weather events possible in northern North Dakota include high-velocity straight-line winds, polar fronts, blizzards, hail and tornadoes.
