Williston
is the county seat for Williams County, located in northwestern North Dakota. It has a population of around 12,000 residents and is home to Williston State College. The Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant is also held here. The Williston area is steeped in history and it is also near the north unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. A thriving tourism industry centers around historic Forts Union and Buford, as well as the Lewis & Clark Expedition and State Park, which is located 19 miles southeast of Williston. Fort Union was the most important trading post on the upper Missouri River from 1828 to 1867. Fort Buford was a military post established to protect overland and river routes used by immigrants heading West. It is also remembered as the place the famous Chief Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881. The town of Williston is near the upper end of the Lake Sakakawea Reservoir, the third largest man-made lake in the United States. The reservoir and other parks in the area offer an abundance of outdoor recreational activities, such as swimming, fishing, hunting, birding, hiking and golf. Northwest North Dakota lies within the continental interior of the Great Plains region of the United States. The climate has four very distinct seasons with long, cold winters and sunny, hot summers. Rainfall is sparse to moderate with periods of drought. Typical of the Great Plains, winters in this region are characterized by cold sub-arctic temperatures with moderate snowfall. Summers are sunny, warm and pleasant, with occasional humidity and thunderstorms. However, in general, the climate in North Dakota is quite dry. Spring and fall are short seasons with highly variable conditions. The average annual temperature is 40°F (4°C), ranging from 7°F (-14°C) in January to 69°F (21°C) in July. The average yearly precipitation between 1971-2000 was about 16.8 in (42.7 cm.) The total annual snowfall averages 44 inches.
