Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota and the county seat of Burleigh County. It is the second most populous city in the state, after Fargo. The city of Bismarck was founded in 1872 and sits on the Missouri Plateau, right across the Missouri River from the town of Mandan. The population of the whole metropolitan Bismarch/Mandan area is estimated at just over 103,000. Bismarck is considered the economic center of south-central North Dakota. The downtown area, which is located near the center of the city, is distinctive due to a major shopping center located there (rather than in a suburban setting.) The Cathedral District of Bismarck is a picturesque neighborhood near downtown that gets its' name from the Art Deco Cathedral of the Holy Spirit that is located within the district. Large, lovely American Elms line the streets and some homes in the Cathedral District date to the 1880s, while others were built in the early part of the 20th century. Other attractions in Bismarck include the Dakota Zoo, which is located on the east bank of the Missouri River in Sertoma Park. You can also cruise the wide Missouri River on the Lewis & Clark Riverboat and visit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, which is a legacy to the two frontiersmen. You'll find many other historic sites in Bismarck, along with water parks and theme parks, a science museum, and even gambling at a casino/resort located just 46 miles south of the city.
