Mandan
is situated directly across the Missouri River from the city of Bismarck. It is located in Morton County and is a major part of the Bismarck-Mandan metropolitan statistical area. The approximate population of Mandan is 17,500 and the whole metro area is around 103,000. Mandan was founded in 1879 and became the Morton County seat in 1881, just as the western expansion began with the coming of the railroad. In 1883, a railroad bridge was built in Mandan, spanning the mighty Missouri River and linking east to west. Mandan's slogan "Where the West Begins," captures the town's rugged spirit and proud heritage. The community first began as a village for the Mandan Indian tribe, then as a cavalry fort and later as a railroad town and hub for farmers and ranchers. Today, it's a growing community with a friendly, "hometown" atmosphere. Attractions in Mandan include weeknight summer concerts in Dykshoorn Park, Ft. Lincoln State Park and the Custer House, a railroad museum, Huff Hills ski area, two golf courses, miles of hiking and bike trails and a new soccer complex. Mandan also hosts the Buggies-n-Blues classic car show on Main Street the second weekend of June and Rodeo Days over the Fourth of July (which includes the state's longest parade.)

Central North Dakota has a climate classified as semi-arid continental. This region lies between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes, so the climate is similar to both locations. Central North Dakota experiences four distinct seasons and great variations in temperatures over short periods of time. It is characterized by long, cold sub-arctic-like winters with moderate snowfall and dry summers, which are typically warm and pleasant with occasional periods of extreme heat and humidity. Like other states in the northern Great Plains, it is also fairly dry. The warmest month is typically July and the coldest month is January. The wettest month is June and the driest month is December. This region of North Dakota receives an average of around 17 inches of rain per year, and 41 inches of snow per season.
