Jamestown is located in Stutsman County, North Dakota, in the southeastern portion of the state. It has a population of approximately 15,000 making it the seventh largest city in North Dakota. Jamestown, home to Jamestown College, has a convenient location at the intersection of I-94 and Highway 281, midway between Bismarck and Fargo. Home to the "World's Largest Buffalo," Jamestown is known as the "Pride of the Prairie." The cement buffalo statue was created as an art class project by a group of Jamestown College students in 1958. It now overlooks the city and is part of the tourist attraction called Frontier Village. The Village also features the National Buffalo Museum, which is home to White Cloud, an albino buffalo that is considered a sacred and lucky omen by many Native Americans. The city of Jamestown is situated in a valley where the James and Pipestem River meet, making it a recreational playground for fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing. In addition, the Jamestown Reservoir is located at the north end of the city and offers boating, fishing and other watersports. An interesting note: the James River is the longest un-navigable river in the world, and its original name in the local Native American dialect literally means, un-navigable river." Jamestown is also home to two 18-hole golf courses, the Jamestown Civic Center and the Jamestown Arts Center.

Jamestown Weather & Climate

Southeast North Dakota has a four-season climate with extreme differences between summer and winter. Located in the Great Plains, away from both the mountains and oceans, the climate is classified as semi-arid continental. This translates into long, snowy, sub-arctic-like winters and warm, dry summers. Spring and autumn are short and highly variable seasons in the Great Plains. In general, North Dakota summers are dry, but it can occasionally be quite humid with thunderstorms. The eastern region of the state receives more precipitation than the west. Springtime flooding is also a relatively common event in southeast North Dakota, due to the springtime melt and eventual runoff of rivers in the area. This region of North Dakota receives an average of around 16 to 18 inches of rain per year, and 41 inches of snow per season.
