Valley-City is a town of approximately 7,000, located in the southeastern part of North Dakota. The town is known for its many bridges over the winding Sheyenne River and is often called the "City of Bridges." One of the most well known is the Highline Railroad Bridge, which is one of the longest and highest single-track railroad bridges in the country. Valley City has seven parks that include a 9-hole golf course, an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, ball fields, a recreational center, campgrounds and more. Lake Ashtabula is located just 12 miles north of Valley City and offers excellent fishing, boating and water skiing, camping, hiking and other outdoor sports. The town is also part of the National Scenic Byway, which stretches for 63 miles along the picturesque Sheyenne River Valley. This byway follows ancient Native American foot paths and pioneer wagon trails and provides snowmobiling and cross-country ski trails, as well as opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing and sightseeing. Midwest Living Magazine recommended the National Scenic Byway as a "Fall Color Drive" and it is also listed in National Geographic's "Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways." Valley City is also home to Valley City State University and several special events throughout the year, including the North Dakota Wintershow.

Valley City Weather & Climate

Southeast North Dakota has four distinct seasons. Due to its distance from both mountains and oceans, this region has a climate classified as extreme continental. Southeastern North Dakota is known for its long, cold, snowy winters and warm to hot summers. Spring and autumn are short and highly variable seasons in the Great Plains. In general, North Dakota is quite dry, although summers can be quite humid with occasional thunderstorms. The southeast region of the state receives the most precipitation, more than 20 inches per year. Springtime flooding is a relatively common event in this region, due to the springtime melt and eventual runoff of rivers in the area. Other meteorological events can include hail, blizzards, polar fronts, tornadoes and high-velocity straight-line winds.
