Medora
is a town located in Billings County in southwestern North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the population was 100 residents. Although small, Medora has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state, largely due to the popular Medora Musical. The Medora Musical is a two-hour musical production that is regularly performed at the Burning Hills Amphitheater, which is located in the North Dakota Badlands near Medora. The musical is presented the first weekend of June through the Sunday before Labor Day, starting at 8:30 p.m. nightly. This family-friendly performance takes a look back at the "wild west days" of the area and includes references to Theodore Roosevelt who spent a lot of time in western North Dakota. It includes a mix of patriotic, country, western and gospel music and nationally known variety acts. The spectacular Burning Hills Amphitheater was built in 1958, seats 2,853 and has undergone several renovations over the years, including new sets and stages. Other attractions in Medora include the Billings County Museum, a Doll House Museum, the Chateau de Mores Museum, a children's park, buggy rides and tours of the town. The Painted Canyon is just 7 miles east of Medora and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park 36-Mile Loop is north on East River Road.

Southwest North Dakota is located in the Great Plains region of the United States. It has a climate of four distinct seasons, characterized by long, cold winters and summers that are hot and sunny. Thunderstorms can occur in spring and summer, however, in general, the state of North Dakota is quite dry. Meteorological events in southwest North Dakota include snow, hail, blizzards, polar fronts, rain, tornadoes and thunderstorms. Depending on location, the average annual precipitation ranges from 14 in (35.6 cm) to 22 in (55.9 cm). The southwestern region of the state generally receives the least amount of rainfall and the southeastern corner receives the most precipitation. Winters in North Dakota can be bitterly cold. However, temperatures are usually a few degrees warmer in the south and west portions of the state than in the northern sections.
